THE HIPPOCAMPUS CLUBHOUSE TEAM
For 15 years, I’ve worked with children of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds, but with an affinity for neurodivergent children. Using literary engagement for social and emotional growth, I’ve observed the positive impact of storytelling firsthand, but becoming a mother made me feel this impact at home. The gift of reading with my son from birth, and witnessing his development from newborn to today, inspired me to share my love for storytime with a broader audience.
After discovering that my son is 2e (Twice Exceptional), my passion for expanding awareness and understanding of neurodivergent children (and possibly their parents, too!) has combined with my mission of empowering households and classrooms with SEL (Social & Emotional Learning) storytelling.
The overwhelming response from like-minded parents and teachers in need of substantial resources and support during the pandemic inspired me to broaden the scope of Hippocampus Clubhouse and offer more in assisting those wishing to nurture their neural pathways and the developing minds of children.
Through our One Stop Book Shop and Parent Portal, Hippocampus Clubhouse is a strong and trusted resource to:
Understand how the brain develops and burgeon neuroplasticity in all ages
Increase inclusion, SEL (social & emotional learning), growth mindset, and body safety education curriculum in both households and classrooms
Support households of neurodivergent children and parents
Uncondition adults with negative generational parenting patterns
Offer guidance towards healing trauma and inner child reparenting
Empower families & classrooms to quite literally change the world
At Hippocampus Clubhouse, we assist families & classrooms in exploring their communities and beyond with a multi-sensory approach to tackling some of the heavy truths that currently inundate our households, campuses, news feeds, and everyday life.
To achieve this, we use the Experiential Learning theory, proposed by cognitive psychologist, David Kolb, taking a more holistic approach and emphasizing how experiences, including cognition, environmental factors, and emotions, influence the learning process.
Our Storytime Podcast applies Kolb’s model by:
Summarizing the story (Reflective Observation)
Reading the story (Concrete Experience)
Reflecting on what was said/Intent of the message (Abstract Conceptualization)
Encouraging our listeners to apply/share what was learned from the story (Active Experimentation)
The Hippocampus Clubhouse model initiates “Reading with Intention” vs. “Reading without Critical Thinking.” By further combining book-based activities, storytime is transformed into a multi-sensory experience, targeting both brain hemispheres and firing up the Hippocampus - The Memory Center of the Brain. Hence our name Hippocampus Clubhouse!
